Kiev Observatory (KIV)

Kiev Geomagnetic Observatory was founded in 1958 and has a continuous series of observations of variations of the geomagnetic field. Since 2003 the devices recording digital data have been used in the Kiev observatory. Registration of magnetic field variations is performed with modern magnetic variometric stations LEMI-008.

The observatory is located in 50 km north of the city of Kyiv, it has pavilions for observations of absolute and relative components of the geomagnetic field of the Earth, surrounded by the necessary sanitary zone and provided with scientific and technical personnel.

Due to the INTASS project, Kiev observatory was equipped with modern hardware - the LEMI-008 variometer and the DI-fluxgate magnetometer.

In 2008, due to the close collaboration of the Subbotin Institute of Geophysics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and the Institute of Geophysics of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IGFPAS), a new PSM-8411 variometer was installed at the Kiev observatory. Later it was relocated to the Odessa oservatory.

In 2009 the DI device was replaced with a modern one - THEO 010 theodolite with a GEOMAG-03 fluxgate magnetometer.

In 2010 the new hardware for the Internet connection and data transmission was purchased and installed at the observatory.

Since 2011 Kiev Geomagnetic Observatory is a member of the worldwide INTERMAGNET network.

To date the hardware equipment at the Kiev observatory includes the following devices:

  • LEMI-008 vector magnetometers;
  • MV-01 proton precession magnetometer;
  • MinGeo THEO010 theodolite with a D&I Fluxgate Magnetometer GEOMAG-03.
